WRITING THE CATASTROPHE:
Singing in Dark Times with Donna Hilbert

"We all carry them: stories of loss and regret so overwhelming and painful we cannot find an entry point from which to write. Yet, we cannot put the stories behind us. Sometimes we nurture the illusion that we might write one Big Poem and then be done with it. I have found that the Big Poem plan seldom works. This workshop will take the opposite approach. Our strategy will be to examine one anecdote, dream, memory, or 'telling detail' at a time with the aim of writing a suite of short poems on a weighty subject. We will begin with a generative exercise and look at exemplary poems."

Celebration of Your Daily Poem with editor Jayne Jaudon Ferrer.

February 28, 2015
The Search For Meaning Book Festival
"Writing Through Grief, a discussion with four contributors to the new anthology, The Widows Handbook. (with Kristine Shorey Forbes, Susanne Braham, Connie Fisher, and Abigail Carter)

Description of Presentation: In our grief, we write to process, and sometimes it is practical matters that can fill our heads. What to do with their ashes, their belongings, your wedding rings, with your dreams of him, with your feelings of vulnerability, with your photos of you together, and in general, with yourself without him? We participating contributors will talk about how our writing helped us think through these matters, and in the end, helped us heal.

Location: Pigott 103
Time: 2:30pm-3:30pm
